Chunar Fort is situated on the Vindhya Range in Mirzapur district at a distance of around 40 kms from Varanasi and 35 kms east of Mirzapur. Chunar Fort is also popular by the name of Chandrakanta Chunargarh and Charanadri. The fort is located in Chunar town on the banks of Ganga River. This fort was once a center of Hindu kings. The remains of the time of Hindu kings in the country are still seen in this fort, in which many important images are seen. This fort is also known as Chandrakanta Chunargarh and Nainagarh Charandari. Located on the Vindhyachal mountain, this fort is situated approximately 280 feet above sea level.
There are lots of ligands associated with this fort. According to a myth, the fort was related to King Baali, which is why it is called Chadadri. It is believed that Lord Vishnu came here in the incarnation of Vaman and requested the king to give three pounds of land to Baali and the king got ready for it. After this Lord Vishnu placed his foot on the entire mountain, which was the fort of Chunargarh. The second story connects it to King Vikramaditya of Ujjain. It is believed that Maharaja Vikramaditya built this fort for his sad brother Bhartruhari. Bhartihari was the supreme devotee of Gorakhnath. Throughout his life he lived in this palace and after that he took Samadhi right here. Since then, it is believed that Bhartruhari is still secretly near his samadhi.
An inscription in the fort of Chunjargarh has said that after the Emperor Vikramaditya of Ujjain, Prithviraj Chauhan from 1141 AD to 1191 AD, Shahabuddin Gauri in 1198, Sikandar Shah Lodi in 1512, Babbar in 1529, 1530 From Sher Shah Hussain and from 1536 onwards rulers like Humayun. When Humayun's war took place from Sher Shah Suri, Humayun took refuge in this fort.
Sher Shah Suri had rebuilt this famous fort. Surrounded by high walls all around, it looks very beautiful to see the sunset. In the fort there is a large well made for Sonva Pavilion, Sun Sunshine and in the time of the Queen's bath. It is said that once this fort was occupied by Shahanshah Akbar. At that time, this fort was under the Nawabs of Oudh.

Bhartruhari Samadhi :

This is the epicenter of Bhartruhari, the brother of Maharaja Vikramaditya. It also has a tunnel.

Sonava Pavilion :

This palace is famous for its round shape, water tank etc. It is believed that there was gold in the old time.

Umbrella of building pillars :

It is an open pavilion, in which 52 columns are made. These pillars are made in the memory of 52 kings.
