Varanasi Ghats - Varanasi Ghat Tour - List of Ghats in Varanasi

Varansi Tourism

Varanasi (Kashi) has many beautiful ghat on the Ganges coast, all these ferries are related to some mythological or religious legend. The Varanasi Ghats seem attractive because of the shape of the bow of river Ganga. Being the predominant of all the ghats, the first ray of the sun knocks on the ghats during sunrise. Starting from Rajghat in the north, there are more than 100 Ghats till the Asi Ghat in the south. The fire of pyre at Manikarnika Ghat is never quiet, because the end of those who die outside of Benares is done here only for attaining the virtue. Many Hindus believe that those who die in Varanasi receive liberation.
There are approximately 84 banks in Varanasi. These gates are made up of about 4 miles long coast. Five ghats are considered to be very sacred in these 84 Ghats. They are collectively called 'Panchatirth'. These are: Ashi Ghat, Dashashmeshh Ghat, Adikesh Ghat, Panchganga Ghat and Manikarnika Ghat. The Ashi Ghat is located in the south and Adikesh Ghat is situated in the north most. Every ghat has its own story. Many of the Varanasi ferries were built during the period under the Maratha empire. The guardians of Varanasi have been Maratha, Shinde (Scindia), Holkar, Bhosle and Peshwas families. Most of the Ghats in Varanasi are Bath-Ghat, some Ghats are Antalya Ghat. Mahatma Buddha had a bath in the Mahanagarwari Ghat. Some ghat such as Manikarnika Ghat are connected with some stories etc. While some ghats are also private ownership, Shiva Ghat and Kali Ghat of the former Kashi Nares are private property.
