In Uttar Pradesh, Shravasti was one of the six largest cities in India during the time of Gautam Buddha. The city is mentioned in the epic Mahabharata and it is believed that it has been named after the legendary King Shravast. However, according to Buddhist legends, its name lies in the name of Rishi Sawath who lives here.

History :

Shravasti, situated on the banks of river Rapti was the capital of the Kosala kingdom and here was the rule of King Pasindi, a disciple of Buddha. It is believed that the enlightened person lived here mostly mostly monastic life here. There were several monasteries including Pavarama and the monastery of Rajkarma built by Pasndi.
Today the walls of Savati are still surrounded by an ancient temple dedicated to the remains of three ancient buildings: Stupas of Ananthapindaka, Stupa of angulimala, and a Jain Tirthankar. Outside the entrance of the city, another stupa is Twin Miracle.
It is believed that 19 of the 25 rainy seasons spent here in Buddha were spent in Jatvan Math and the remaining 6 in Pubbarama Math. This is the place where he had given the most discourses and teachings. Shravasti has great significance for the Jain community, and it is believed that the third Jain Tirthankar was born as Sobhavnath.

Shravasti and nearby tourist sites :

Shravasti is a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists and it attracts devotees not only from India but also from other parts of Buddhist world, including Sri Lanka, Japan, China, Thailand. Buddha had spent most of his life during his Shravasti migration at the Jettavan monastery located here. In the city, he had made his first visit to the orphanpandak's invitation, so that he met Rajaghat. Located behind the river Rapti, it is believed to be built by the orphanpinist. The monastery is surrounded by a wall of brick and a high mural wall, with several gates and four high turret. Excavation in this area has found many ruins in literature, including many stupas, monasteries and temples and many pillars and the foundations of Buddhist structures. Balrampur district is a famous tourist destination in the area which is famous for its rich literary landscapes. During this visit you can visit one of the most beautiful villages of the region, Pyangpur and Kharagpur.

Weather :

Like other cities of North India, the ideal time for travel to Shravasti is from November to April, when the weather is pleasant and light. However, Shravasti is a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists and Jains and visitors throughout the year keep coming here.
