In the medieval period, when entire northern India was defeated before Muslim ruler Muhammad Gori, Gorakhpur area was not left out. For a long period, it remained under the rule of Muslim rulers from Qutb-ud-Din Aibak to Bahadur Shah. In 1801, the Nawab of Awadh had marked the modern period with the transfer of this region to the East India Company. With this, Gorakhpur was given a 'District Magistrate'. The first collector was Mr. Routledge. In 1829, Gorakhpur was made the headquarters of a division of the same name, which included the districts of Gorakhpur, Ghazipur and Azamgarh. Mr. R.M. Birad was appointed the Commissioner for the first time. In 1865, the new district settlement was built from Gorakhpur. In 1946 the new district Deoria was made. The third division of Gorakhpur led to the creation of the District of Maharajganj in 1989.

Gorakhnath Temple :
