History of Kushinagar :

Kushinagar was one of the then Mahajanapadas of ancient India and the capital of Malla State . Cunningham has equated Kusinagar with the 'Cassia' located in present day Deoria district. the confirmation of his equation, he mentioned the copper plate found in the stupa , located on the back of 'Parinirvana Temple', on which it is mentioned 'Parinirvavatya Chaitra Artha Iti'. Vincent Smith and the paragraph-churning scholar, do not agree with this combination of Cunningham. According to him, there are substantial variations in the travel details of the remains of the Cassia and the Chinese traveler Hsansang. Keeping this difference in mind, Smith considered Kushinagar's opinion of being located across the first series of hills in Nepal.
According to legend, it is believed that Kushinagar was inhabited by Kush, the eldest son of Ramchandra, son of Dasharath, king of Ayodhya. Kushinagar has also been called 'Kushavati' in the Buddhist texts 'Mahavash'. In the Buddhist period, the same name was 'Kusinara' in Kushinagar or Pali.
According to another Buddhist legend, Ikshvaku of Takshshila, the son of King Taleshwara of Takshashila, brought his capital from Takshashila to Kushinagar. In his lineage, the capital city remained till the time of the twelfth king Sudin.Among them, there were two pratapi kings named Kush and Mahadarshan, who were mentioned by Gautam Buddha.
