This is a very holy religious and must see place for Hindus. According to the history, Alamgir (Aurangjeb) ordered for demolishing the original Shiv temple ,to make the mosque ,which is present at this site-called Gyanvapi mosque.When the mason were demolishing the temple, its original Shiv-lingam jumped from the the temple site into the nearby well-which is now known as Gyan-Kup or Gyanvapi well.The present famous Viswanath temple was made later on by monach of Indore Ahilyabai Holkar. Gyan Kup Well, an imposing pavilion, is located at the entrance to the famous and magnificent holy Kashi Vishwanath temple. It is presently covered by a fabric, stone screen and canopy except a small portion . The water of this well is filthy and decomposed due to offering of flowers in this well by pilgrims who visit this place. Generally people go here before visiting Viswanath temple which is at back. Every pilgrims drink a little water from this well which is offered by attendant priests here. This well offers support to the central dome and two peaks of Kashi Vishwanath temple.
