Kaal Bhairav Mandir is one of the oldest Shiva temples in Varanasi which is around 1.5 kms from Dashashwamedh Ghat. This is one of the most ancient temple of Varanasi. It is Located in Vishweshwar Ganj, 10 minutes drive from Viswanath Mandir. The word "Kaal" means both "death" and "fate". It is believed that even death is afraid of "Kaal Bhairava". It is said that one must first visit this Mandir on entering Varanasi, as He is the protector. He is called as Kotwal of Varanasi. Lots of people visit this temple to get the blessings o Kalabhairava who is a very powerful god in town. Legend says that there should be a Kalabhairava temple in all the shakthi sthals and the kalabhairava protects maa parvati. The temple has the statue of kalabhairava and lots of religious ceremonies are performed by devotees.

In this temple there is Akhand Deep (lamp which burns forever) and its believed to have magical powers of Lord Bhairav . The Akhand Deep - which is believed to be a lamp which shall burn forever, is also said to contain magical powers of Lord Bhairav himself. The temple premises is full of dogs, who are believed to be the vaahan (vehicle) of Lord Bhairav and it is also believed that during the time of the aarti, the dogs here produce a sound which is quite similar to the music emanating from the shankha (conch shells).
